CFN Media Group published an article highlighting the integrated, conglomerate-style plan implemented by Helix TCS Inc (OTCMKTS:HLIX) to the frontier-like cannabis industry. Zachary L. The fragmented nature of emerging and frontier markets indicates that integrated firms can record notable synergies across different parts of the value chain. For instance, cultivator of produce may also run a transportation business and supermarket chain since there are no highly expert peers in any one segment. The same business would face challenges in the U.S. where it pays to specialize in single segment to improve service quality and margins.

It was in the leading markets of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Romania, Morocco, Ghana, Iraq and others that they identified that integrated firms or conglomerates tended to flourish in inefficient, frontier markets, and at the flip side hyper-specialized firms performed best in developed markets.

After establishing a successful private military firm focused on the Middle East and Africa, and driving their investment in the secondary private equity segment, the now CEO and Director of Helix turned their focus to the legal cannabis market, which showcased many of the same features as frontier markets, capitally constrained, highly fragmented, inconsistent regulatory and legal environments, and no hegemonic peers. They realized that this paved the way to establishing an integrated service provider and to take benefit of various work and synergies across the value chain.

Helix started with a focus on security and transportation since it touches different aspects of the cannabis market. For instance, these firms may be contracted by cultivators to transport products to dispensaries as well as may be contracted by them to offer security. The company’s business plan was to establish robust operating relationships and companies across the value chain before venturing into different targeted divisions and eventually defining new services and products.
