New Mexico State Senate Approves Revised Medical Marijuana Provisions And Higher Plant

Published

on

The New Mexico Senate has approved the new medical conditions of the state’s medical marijuana program which will raise the limit on cannabis production to satisfy the increased demand for the products. The new bill is sponsored by the Democratic Sen. Cisco McSorley of Albuquerque who recently won the Senate Approval and has been forwarded to the House of Representatives for further scrutiny.

The revisions on the program is a significant event for the entire New Mexico since it will enable 14 additional medical conditions that can be treated using marijuana and can allow visitors from other states to purchase the cannabis in the New Mexico. Currently, there are about 32,000 registered patients limited to 450 plants each. The new laws will be effective once the number of registered patients reach the 35,000 mark.

The earlier bills that would have allowed the military veterans to qualify as patients without any medical diagnosis were significantly dropped. In March, Colorado’s state House approved a bill that limits medical cannabis patients to only 16 plants of marijuana in their homes, down from 99. The new law was intended to control citizens from growing pot outside the regulated and taxed commercial marijuana system.

For a long time, the Colorado regulators have tried to prevent people from growing huge amounts of pot that are beyond the taxation or oversight of the state regulations. But since the state’s Constitution allows people to grow pot without limits, Colorado has encountered many challenges to change the law. Out of the 28 states in the US that have legalized marijuana, it’s only Colorado that currently allows patients to plant more than 16 pot plants in every home.

Most states have per-home plant limits but lack of state-wide limits could make it difficult for the regulators to distinguish between valid patients and those from the black-market. Marijuana patients have flooded lawmaker offices with complaints about the state bills but with the positive progress, there is hope for medical cannabis patients.
