Recreational And Medical Marijuana: What Is The Difference?

Published

on

Marijuana is theoretically illegal across the US at the federal level. The truth of the matter is that the US Federal Government does not discern marijuana as medical or recreational. Conversely, the law is distorted by state per state rules and regulations, which may have their own laws. As a result, the legality of weed has increasingly become an area of conflict in the entire country, thus making it a hot topic of great controversy.

Today, there are 25 states in addition to the District of Columbia who has legalized cannabis for medical use. While Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and the District of Columbia, have sanctioned marijuana for recreational purpose. Generally, medical marijuana is taken more seriously than recreational cannabis. As a result, many states are recognizing marijuana on a medical ground by making the weed available to the patients.

The following are the key differences between recreational marijuana and medical cannabis:

  • Medical marijuana has higher CBD content than recreational. When you take medical marijuana, you don’t feel ‘high’ as associated with recreational weed. The medical edible power is usually higher than the recreational complement. While recreational weed has higher THC content compared to the medical cannabis.
  • For medical marijuana, one needs to have a recommendation letter which is renewed regularly when purchasing it, while recreational cannabis can be purchased from any recreational dispensary for as long as one has surpassed the age limit.
  • You need to have surpassed the age of 18 years to purchase the medical marijuana from the certified dispensary. While for recreational marijuana, there are some particular instances where people under the age of 18 years can purchase marijuana depending on the state laws.
  • One should be 21 years and above to purchase the recreational marijuana from a certified dispensary in states where it’s legalized.
  • Medical weed can be purchased from any certified medical dispensary. Recreational pot can be purchased from a dispensary or any other shop that sells it.
