The Dilemma Of Current Ethical And Responsible Use Of Marijuana

Published

on

In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) shot down all hopes of downgrading marijuana from its current status as Schedule I narcotic which was enacted by the Controlled Substances Act in the 1970s. For a long time, marijuana has been categorized in the same class as heroin, ecstasy, peyote, and LSD.

Although the federal government still classifies marijuana as a highly addictive drug and that it contains no medicinal values; many states in the US have legalized or are in the process of legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use. It’s quite true that the benefits and medical potential of marijuana are common knowledge to most American citizens, a fact that DEA and the federal government has not acknowledged yet.

The main reason that justifies DEA’s decision to maintain marijuana as Schedule I is that there is no evidence or scientifically proven medical value of the cannabis. It’s also considered as dangerous and addictive just like the others in the same category because of its high possibilities for abuse. But a group of cannabis advocates argues that if that’s the logic, then why not list alcohol, tobacco or caffeine in the same category?

There are more and more studies that are coming up to verify the prevailing medical potential of the cannabis; however, DEA remains the roadblock to any advancement in the research field. For many scientists and physicians, it’s difficult to gain the clearance and access to funding opportunities since marijuana is still listed under schedule I. Until marijuana is reclassified, it may be difficult to fully realize its potential as a medicine. At the moment, patients have to comply with the state regulations which vary from one state to another.

Once the medicinal value of cannabis comes to fruition, the Big-Pharma industry stands to lose business. A previous study conducted by the Drug and Alcohol Review revealed that more than 86% of the medical patients have eliminated at least one or more of their pharma prescription and replaced them with the weed. Marijuana is known for its natural, non-toxic elements that have less side-effect compared to the harsh pharmaceutics.
