Aleafia Health Inc. (OTCMKTS:ALEAF) And Emblem Corp (OTCMKTS:EMMBF) Tie-Up To Create An Expanded Network Of Clinics In Canada

Emblem Corp

Aleafia Health Inc. (OTCMKTS:ALEAF) And Emblem Corp (OTCMKTS:EMMBF) have merged whereby the former will acquire the latter in an all-share transaction. According to CFN Media Group, the deal worth $173.2 million will form the largest network of medical cannabis clinics in Canada. It brings together two industry giants. The deal will also give Aleafia entry into the nascent recreational cannabis market, which Emblem is now operating in.

The combination is well – timed given the rapid growth of Canada’s cannabis industry. The legalization of recreational pot in October has accelerated the growth. This will take the competition to another level given that a majority of investors are also keen about industry mergers.

How will each of the companies benefit from the merger?

Each of them has a unique and precise presence in the industry. In any case, they have their clientele base intact. Aleafia operates 22 clinics, which service approximately 60,000 patients. It will produce 138,000 kilograms of medical cannabis per year, and the primary goal is to become a leader in the medical side of the industry. However, it is still pursuing a Health Canada license to sell recreational cannabis.

On the other hand, Emblem has its operations in both the medical and adult-use markets. It is a licensed producer and owns a recreational brand; Symbl, which is sold in various regions such as British Columbia and Ontario. According to Emblem CEO Nick Dean, Aleafia has solid strength needed for the consolidation.

He explained, “We started chatting with Aleafia about seven to eight weeks ago and saw an immediate benefit there. They had what we were looking for — the strength to bring patients into clinics.”

Analysts speculated that the industry was ripe for consolidation

The consolidation by the two companies is not a significant surprise according to analysts. They foresaw it the moment Canada legalized pot. Besides, Emblem has already established a joint venture with the likes of Acnos Pharma.

Analysts have stated that with the revolution of the industry there should be other mergers in the coming months. Acquiring an established entity may seem expensive but Head of Research at Jacob Capital Management, Khurram Malik, say it is faster. Besides the buyer gets existing infrastructure other than building it from scratch.
