Benefits of CBD and Arthritis in the Human Body

Published

on

Arthritis is a disease that mostly affects the aged population and it can be extremely debilitating because it attacks the joints of the body through inflammations. It could just occur in one joint or in several joints. There are pharmaceutical medications today that can help alleviate the pain caused by arthritis, but many people feel wary about side effects.

Studies conducted on CBD oil and other CBD products as an optional treatment has shown promising results. CBD is a compound extracted from hemp plants. It has been around for hundreds of years by past generations and is still used to relieve pain associated with chronic conditions, one of which is arthritis.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints, causing pain and stiffness. Surprisingly, there are over a hundred types of the disease with varying causes, each requiring a different treatment method. The most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Although the symptoms of this condition develop gradually over time, there are some cases where they may manifest themselves abruptly. The most common age group affected by the disease is age 65 and over, but there are rare cases where it develops in children, teenagers, and young adults. Also, women and overweight individuals are more prone to this condition.

The most common symptoms of arthritis are swelling, pain, and stiffness of the joints. Because of these symptoms, the person’s range of motion decreases and redness occurs in the areas surrounding the affected joint. For the majority, these symptoms are at their worse in the morning.

Research about CBD and arthritis

Several studies on animals have suggested that high-quality CBD products from reputable manufacturers like Greenleaf Farms can help treat arthritis and relieve the associated pain. Here are some examples of studies focused on CBD:

  • In 2011, a study suggested that the use of CBD or hemp oil reduced the inflammatory pain on lab rats by affecting the way pain receptors respond to stimuli.
  • In 2014, a review led to the conclusion that CBD could be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis.
  • In 2016, a study on the application of CBD topical ointments and CBD cream indicated that it had the potential to relieve inflammation and pain associated with arthritis.
  • In 2017, a study suggested that CBD might be a safe and useful treatment for joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Although all these findings are promising, there is a need for more research to finally confirm that CBD oil is an effective treatment for humans.

Benefits of CBD on arthritis

While research continues on the good effects of CBD on arthritis, anecdotal evidence has also provided promising results. Here are some benefits of CBD on this condition:

  • CBD helps ease arthritis pain

One of the main benefits of using CBD oil is how it affects pain positively. After all, CBD has analgesic properties. The same research has affirmed that CBD reduces inflammation in joints and also serves as a protector of nerves.

  • CBD may relieve other types of chronic pain conditions too

CBD may relieve chronic pain along with other chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis, cancer, and more. Some CBD studies have even shown positive effects in easing fibromyalgia pain.

  • CBD helps ease depression and anxiety

CBD may also benefit different mental health conditions such as a reduction in anxiety. Studies have suggested that CBD oils are so effective that they may have considerable potential as a treatment for several anxiety disorders. There also are studies that have linked the use of CBD to the lowering of the symptoms of depression.

What type of CBD to use

CBD offers different types of product options. It can come in the form of CBD oil, CBD tinctures, CBD soft gel capsules, CBD creams, and more. Whichever you choose to take depends on the location and severity of the pain. For specific targets, CBD topicals are the most recommended. For conditions where you feel pain all over, a tincture or a dietary supplement can provide the best relief.

Benefits of CBD and Glaucoma

Published

on

CBD oil found itself linked permanently with the treatment of eye diseases back in 1976. An octogenarian called David Randall found that whenever he used cannabis, his eye disease gradually got better, and the reverse was true when he stopped. Is there any truth to his claim or was it just that – an unscientific shot in the dark that gained way too much attention?

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition caused by a buildup of aqueous humor in the eye. Put simply, the liquid that keeps your eyes moist need to drain away somehow. Glaucoma is a condition where this doesn’t happen naturally due to blockage of the eyes’ drainage channels. This is usually accompanied by the deterioration of the optic nerve and high fluid pressure at the front part of the eye. If left untreated, it could lead to a gradual loss of vision and irreversible damage.

Modern treatment includes surgery, microsurgery, eye drop medication, and, more recently, the use of marijuana or hemp-based products like hemp extract and CBD oil.

Using CBD for Glaucoma

Despite numerous existing alternative methods for treating glaucoma, each of them come with their own complications. Eye drops tend to cause a number of reactions and allergies, and surgeries often face complications and are expensive. A relatively recent addition to the list of acceptable methods of treating the disease includes using CBD.

CBD has an arguable advantage over conventional methods since there is no known allergic reaction to CBD. It doesn’t react with any drugs that are readily available on the market, doesn’t have any serious side-effects and is relatively cheap. It also sets itself apart from marijuana since it contains little to no THC – meaning being that it causes no psychoactive reactions in the body. CBD extracted from the hemp plant is also legal in every state in the US.

Historically speaking, marijuana has always been in the spotlight due to its observable effects on the treatment of various ailments. Of particular importance has always been its tendency to decrease blood pressure, which, in turn, leads to a decrease in ocular pressure on the blood vessels. Recent studies have established this to be true of CBD also.

CBD has a number of incredible effects on the human body. This includes antioxidants, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. The current craze around it is only dampened by those who worry that inhalation of CBD, either via vaping or smoking hemp oil is going to have negative side-effects. The argument goes that at the end of the day, inhaling combustible materials is going to take its toll on the throat and lungs. This may be true, but it’s greatly alleviated by the fact that there are a dozen different ways to take CBD.

In fact, most major CBD outlets like Greenland Farms advise taking in CBD using a CBD tincture or dropper, since some people’s eyes are sensitive to vape smoke.

Are there risks?

Right before you jump onto the CBD train to relieve glaucoma symptoms, it’s important to understand that CBD isn’t a bulletproof treatment. For a number of select individuals, it turns out CBD may actually counteract the relief normally believed to be caused by THC.

For about 20 years, clinical trials have indicated that CBD is either an active ingredient in the treatment of glaucoma or, at worst, is just inactive. A study published in the Journal of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science in 2018 disputes this. According to their findings, CBD may actually increase ocular pressure on the optic nerve, worsening glaucoma.

The conflicting findings means more research needs to be carried out before CBD can either be officially ruled out as a means of treatment or officially acknowledged. Ultimately, the implication is that CBD should not be used in self-treatment without consulting a doctor first. Special groups of people like pregnant mothers and children should also avoid using CBD.

How A Simple CBD Tincture with Childs Epilepsy and Seizures

Published

on

With all the attention CBD has been getting in and outside mainstream media, it was only going to be a matter of time before it got some form of recognition by the medical community. Medical professionals had mostly stayed away from forming general opinions of the drug because of a lack of clinical data, and as a consequence, lack of data regarding its effects.

With the approval of Epidiolex for treatment of seizures by the FDA, we are getting closer to formal recognition of the drug as a remedy for a lot more than just pain and inducing appetite.

What are epileptic seizures and how are they treated?

A seizure is a sudden convulsion of the body, normally caused by erratic electrical activity in the brain. This activity can quickly spread and cause uncontrolled physical movements and cause the affected person to lose consciousness. Most anti-seizure drugs work by slowing down nerve activity in the brain.

We don’t currently know any drug that can cure epilepsy, and the best doctors can offer is something to relieve the symptoms. However, current remedies are problematic because they exhibit some serious side-effects.

Common ones include anemia, allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts, and liver failure. Considering it’s a life-long disease, these aren’t symptoms anyone should have to contend with, just so their quality of life is bearable.

CBD oil is a relatively new remedy that has been thrust into the spotlight thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. For which reason, it can provide pain relief, prevent nausea and may even soon be used to develop a drug to slow down the progression of cancer.

How does CBD help with seizures?

Currently, the FDA has approved only one drug that contains CBD for the treatment of diseases. In particular, Epidiolex is used in the treatment of two forms of epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome. These are notoriously hard to treat. There do exist drugs that can be used to treat them, but patients often need to take two or more different kinds of them at a time, and even then, are still left to deal with the side-effects.

Furthermore, the body builds up a tolerance to drugs used for epilepsy pretty fast. About two-thirds of patients will respond positively the first few times they use epilepsy medication. They then stop being effective after a while, and we’re still not sure why.

With all the different kinds of medication available, it’s not all that difficult to come across patients with whom none of the available medication works. For these patients, there’s little another choice other than to rely on special diets, implanting of special devices or, more recently, the use of CBD oil.

In most cases, it’s possible to explain away the effectiveness of CBD oil due to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system in ways other drugs don’t.

most anti-seizure medication works either by altering electrical activity in neurons, decreasing excitation; or inhibiting chemical transmission between neurons. However, for some drugs, the mode of action is unknown. CBD is one such drug.

Plausible explanations for the action of CBD on the brain include underlying effects on nerve cells and inhibition of chemical transmission. However, there is no concrete evidence regarding this. Additionally, according to a study carried out in Israel, about a third of patients develop tolerance to CBD within three months of taking it. This calls for increased dosages to maintain efficiency.

Are there any risks to taking CBD?

The good news when it comes to CBD is that it has almost no potential for addiction. Unlike other drugs (mostly opioids) that interact with the central nervous system directly, CBD is instead active on the endocannabinoid system.

Additionally, even major CBD outlets like Greenleaf Farms are quick to point out that despite the deep link between CBD and epileptic seizures, it’s not a cure-all medication. Always consult a doctor before attempting to self-medicate.

Benefits of CBD and Endocrine Diseases

Published

on

The endocrine system is a collection of glands all over the body that is responsible for the secretion of hormones into the bloodstream. An endocrine disorder happens when this system is no longer able to function properly.

The endocrine system is composed of a set of glands responsible for the production of hormones that play a vital role in the regulation of body signals. These include appetite, sleep, weight, breathing, and even puberty. Almost every aspect of the body has something to do with hormones.

Diseases such as diabetes, Graves’ Disease, and Cushing’s Syndrome are all endocrine disorders. Each of them is a unique disease treated in different ways, but CBD and endocrine diseases have become tangled – one as a remedy for the other – in the recent past.

How endocrine system disorders occur

Endocrine disorders occur when one or more endocrine glands no longer functions properly. If even one gland starts to produce too much or too little of a particular hormone, chances of an endocrine disorder occurring go up. Such a disorder can either be generic, or due to tumors, nodules or lesions inhibit an endocrine gland’s normal functioning.

In diabetes, for example, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin; and in hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism is the opposite of this.

All in all, most endocrine disorders don’t have a specific cure and can last with the patient for years or even their whole lives. If left untreated, they can result in poor quality of life, general body pain, loss of weight, total inability to move, work or function and death.

However, there exist medications and therapies that can be used to manage the symptoms they exhibit. One of the ways these symptoms can be suppressed and managed is through the use of CBD.

CBD and the endocrine system

According to recent studies, CBD has the potential to regulate the endocrine system and manage harmful symptoms exhibited by some endocrine disorders. One case that stands out, in particular, is when the disorder is caused by the presence of a tumor on endocrine glands. CBD and endocrine diseases caused by cancer cells can be inhibited and, possibly have an invasion of prostate tumors prohibited.

There is also some evidence available that suggests CBD has some degree of influence over the production of hormones in some glands in the body, including the thyroid gland. Keep in mind that research into the effect of CBD on the endocrine system is in very preliminary stages, however.

What we are sure of, though, is the effect CBD has when it comes to keeping the symptoms of certain endocrine disorders under control. The most common of these are insomnia and anxiety.

Of all the uses CBD has found in the modern age, the most well-documented is its ability to reduce feelings of anxiety. This is thought to be as a result of its ability to bind directly with CB1 receptors in the brain and affect the production of cortisol and serotonin.

Serotonin is a mood-regulating hormone, whose deficiency is usually manifested via feelings of anxiety and depression. A high level of cortisol also leads to feelings of stress and impending doom, as exhibited by people with anxiety.

Another well-known property of CBD is getting rid of insomnia. Sleep is yet another part of human life thought to be controlled, at least in part, by the endocannabinoid system. This is done via the circadian rhythm, which keeps wakefulness and sleepiness in check. In people with anxiety, this rhythm can be thrown off, making them unable to fall asleep.

On the other hand, another common symptom of endocrine disorders is unsatisfying sleep. REM sleep is the part of sleeping where, if experienced properly, a person feels well-rested. In people with certain endocrine disorders and anxiety, REM sleep may be lacking. A CBD dropper or CBD tincture right before bed is a good way to
